Description

Estevan Mercury Publications is seeking a diligent, versatile reporter to work for our two award-winning weekly newspapers in Estevan, Saskatchewan.

The Estevan Mercury is one of Saskatchewan’s oldest and most respected weekly newspapers. It is a broadsheet paper published each Wednesday, and distributed to all residences in Estevan and to some rural homes.

Southeast Lifestyles, which emphasizes human interest and community stories, is a tabloid paper delivered on Fridays to all homes in Estevan and to numerous rural communities in the southeast region.

Both papers have a strong following in the southeast, and are well-known for covering a variety of stories and events.

We are looking for a reporter to cover events in the community and write human interest stories. Estevan has many stories to cover throughout the year in education, health-care, politics, law enforcement, arts and culture, agriculture, energy and other areas.

The successful applicant will be responsible for finding story ideas and accepting assignments from the editor. The expectation will be 10 to 15 stories per week. This person will also have to upload some stories to our website, www.estevanmercury.ca.

Not only will this person have interviewing and writing skills, but photography skills are a must. Also beneficial will be an interest in sports, and knowledge of various social media platforms.

Qualifications

  • A post-secondary journalism diploma or degree (or equivalent);
  • Experience in print journalism;
  • Knowledge of CP style;
  • A valid driver’s licence and access to a reliable vehicle;
  • A willingness and ability to work evenings and weekends.

Applicants are asked to include their employment history in the newspaper industry, several writing and photography samples (as a .pdf or through online links), multiple references and any other applicable information. Please mention that you found this posting on Jeff Gaulin's job board.
