Star Metro Media is looking for an associate editor to join our dynamic content team, whose background includes experience with deadline-driven projects in a fast-paced environment. Reporting to the Managing Editor, the successful candidate will be responsible for a variety of both local and national special features in Metro, and the Toronto Star, This position is a maternity leave coverage position, one-year contract.


What will you do:

  • Create strong special feature story lineups for target readership across all platforms, including, the Toronto Star, and
  • Participate in story concept and packaging meetings, generate story ideas
  • Manage freelance (writers and photographers) assignments for a variety of sections, both in the Star and Metro
  • Send creative briefs to writers that include story concept, required interviews, expected tone and style, word count, deadline and fee
  • Proofread and edit for print and digital
  • Write compelling heads, decks and display copy
  • Coordinate with layout and production departments (both off-site and in-house) to ensure timely and accurate implementation of content
  • Work with designers to ensure all projects are executed with appropriate templates and specs
  • Ensure special section deadlines are met
  • Contribute to the special features calendars and sell sheets
  • Take on a variety of tasks, as assigned


Who you are:

  • Minimum 3-5 years newspaper or related experience
  • Post-secondary education in journalism
  • Experience working on digital platforms
  • Strong story concept and packaging skills
  • Experience assigning and editing stories
  • Established connections to local editorial freelancers
  • Superb editing and display-writing skills
  • Experience in copy editing and proofing
  • Solid news judgment
  • Knowledge of CP style, libel and contempt of court law as it applies to newspapers and online journalism
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a demanding, deadline-driven environment with numerous priorities while undertaking many tasks simultaneously
  • Strong organizational, analytical, problem-solving and communication skills
  • Experience with custom/sponsored content, or native advertising, executions considered an asset
