Castanet has an opening for a news director at its Vernon office.
The successful candidate will run a small staff from our downtown Vernon office, edit, assign and report his or her own copy, as well as work closely with the rest of our staff throughout the Okanagan.
The job requires some evening and weekend work and, at times, will be responsible for covering the entire valley and site. We are a multimedia news operation, and the job will entail writing and editing for the website, shooting and editing video news reports, on-camera work, preparing audio clips for our partner news radio operation, and some reading of news on air.
The successful candidate will write a minimum of five news stories a day, one with video; manage Vernon headline stack and splash photos; bring their own story ideas to the table as well as work on assigned pieces; develop a network of local contacts and sources; craft tightly written, informative and entertaining stories with captivating images and headlines; manage Castanet SMS on their own, post local and wire stories to the site; edit other reporters’ copy as needed.
The Vernon news director reports to our valley Director of Content, Jon Manchester.
- Journalism degree or diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution or applicable career experience in journalism;
- Be able to work in print, video and radio settings;
- Be computer and social media savvy;
- Able to recognize a good story and develop it into compelling content;
- Exceptional knowledge of Canadian Press style
