The Dryden Observer, an independent weekly newspaper in Northwestern Ontario, is looking for an experienced journalist to lead it into the future as its managing editor.
- In addition to news writing, opinion pieces and photography for several stories a week, the successful candidate will coordinate with both local and regional staff writers, freelancers and columnists to plan the weekly edition;
- Attend meetings, sports and cultural events, often on evenings and weekends;
- Edit copy and process images for print. Design and pagination skills are an asset;
- Work with submitters to ensure letters to the editor meet submission guidelines and conform to CP style.
Whenever possible, the successful candidate will post breaking news items of public interest to the web and work to maintain a high frequency of posts to web platforms and social media.
The ideal candidate should be first and foremost be a strong reporter/photographer with minimum of three years experience in the field. They should possess a keen news sense, strong people skills, a sharp writing style, an understanding of public institutions and municipal governance, a working knowledge of design software, web platforms and a vision to adapt and evolve our news product.
