Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Communications is responsible for making sure Clean Energy Canada’s communications and engagement efforts are strategic, innovative and effectively executed. The Director is primarily responsible for developing and overseeing the implementation of communications strategy, in coordination with the Executive Director and Policy Director, and working with the communications team and other staff to ensure our brand and expertise is reflected in a consistent and compelling way across all of our communications products and channels.
This position reports to the Executive Director and oversees the Communications Manager, who in turn manages the Digital Communications Specialist and is responsible for the day-to-day execution of communications activities and deliverables.
The location for the position is Clean Energy Canada’s Ottawa, Victoria, or Vancouver offices.

The Director of Communications will be expected to:
- Develop and execute Clean Energy Canada's communications strategy, through collaboration with the Executive Director, Policy Director, communications team and other staff.
- Oversee and contribute to the creation of targeted and engaging communications content that reflects Clean Energy Canada's brand, voice and expertise, and grows our community.
- Manage and support the growth and performance of the other members of the communications team.
- Recruit and oversee third-party contractors and service-providers; develop budgets, contracts and provide feedback on execution of work.
- Support the Communications Manager in writing and editing various communications materials, fielding media requests, pitching op-ed submissions, and building relationships with journalists.
- Contribute to maintaining up-to-date contact records in the organization’s CRM system (Batchbook).
- Ensure Clean Energy Canada's templates and branding materials are used consistently and kept up-to-date.
- Lead monthly, quarterly and annual reporting and analysis of Clean Energy Canada’s communications impact, tracking against established benchmarks, goals and metrics.
- Lead Clean Energy Canada’s opinion and communications research initiatives, including focus group research, polling and digital testing.
- Advise other team members on communications tactics and messaging to best reach and resonate with target audiences.

- Proven skills in leadership, team development and organizational systems management
- An undergraduate or graduate degree and at least ten years' experience in environmental/energy communications, science/business/policy journalism, or a related field
- Familiarity with Canadian and international climate and energy policy issues
- Outstanding interpersonal communication skills and writing experience in English (French comprehension and writing/editing skills would be an asset)
- Demonstrated experience developing, executing and evaluating communications strategies, tactics and campaigns
- Demonstrated project management expertise, preferably in a communications-related field, including the use of project management software
- A conscientious work ethic, proven time management skills and experience juggling competing deadlines and priorities
- Impeccable spelling and grammar, adhering to Canadian Press style conventions
- Experience developing website content using Wordpress (front-end only)
- High proficiency in Microsoft Word and PowerPoint, including working with styles and templates and the ability to train or support others on the team
- Experience using MailChimp (or a similar service) for direct email marketing
- Working experience with CRM database management, using Batchbook or a similar system (e.g. Maximizer, Salesforce, Constant Contact)
- Proven ability to take initiative and work independently, while also being highly collaborative and receptive to feedback, direction and changing priorities
- A commitment to personal and professional growth and a sense of humour
