As part of an in-house design team, the Senior Graphic Designer is responsible for the conceptualization, design, and production of the award-winning OWL magazine and brand in collaboration with the OWL Editor and Creative Director.
 
This is a one-year contract position (4 - 5 days per week) with the potential to become permanent.
 
Responsibilities
  • Work closely with the Editor and Creative Director to conceptualize and design fresh, innovative and engaging stories that appeal to OWL’s international tween audience
  • Brainstorm, research, art direct, and design content that fulfills the current mandate of OWL brands: OWL print magazine, OWL SIPs, and OWLconnected eMagazine
  • Conceptualize and create effective magazine covers that drive newsstand sales
  • Assign and art direct illustration, photography, attend photo shoots and manage art contracts
  • Negotiate fees and manage art budgets
  • Ensure design quality, consistency and delivery by managing product production from concept to completion under tight deadlines
  • Contribute to editorial planning
  • Assist with special projects as needed
Owlkids, a division of Bayard Canada, publishes award-winning magazines and books for children ages 2 to 14. Our magazines, Chirp (ages 3-6), Chickadee (ages 6-9), and OWL (ages 9-13), delight and engage more than 1 million readers every year. Our book-publishing program, Owlkids Books, has over 300 print and digital books available for young readers. Launched in 1976, Owlkids is based in Toronto.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in Graphic Design
  • Minimum 2 – 5 years graphic design experience in magazines, books, or educational publishing, particularly children’s publishing
  • Exceptional proficiency in Adobe CS: InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, DPS
  • Detail oriented
  • Strong organizational, time management and multitasking skills
  • Strong verbal communication skills
  • Ability to take initiative and work collaboratively
  • Knowledge of social trends and interests of children 9 to 13 years old
  • Knowledge of French an asset
