The Toronto Star is looking for experienced audio/video editors and producers for one full-time vacancy in the digital department of the Star newsroom. This role is an assignment under the existing Video Producer classification. A small, dedicated team – with the addition of two audio host/producers – will collaborate to create frequent, engaging, premium audio episodes that include sources from inside the Star as well as original reporting.
The audio video editor/producer assignment will be responsible for producing and editing audio stories, including helping to develop, produce, edit, and upload audio content to thestar.com and third party platforms. Furthermore, the successful candidate will help schedule shoots with guests (internal and external), and work with journalists and hosts on scripting, storyboarding, crewing, scheduling, and all stages of post-production. They will also review daily and long-term assignments to identify stories and topics that will benefit from audio.
  • Record and/or edit audio as required
  • Develop, plan and schedule audio production - including interviews, behind-the-scenes material, original content, and coverage of events and activities
  • Participate in content brainstorm discussions and pitch creative suggestions for audio content to the newsroom
  • Working across the newsroom, be involved in all aspect of audio creation - scripting and storyboarding, crewing and scheduling, recording, and all stages of post-production
  • Produce finished audio in adherence to the Toronto Star’s quality, editorial and ethical standards in a timely manner
  • Continually improve and broaden digital audio skills and awareness of the latest audio tools and technology
  • Schedule shoots with talent and guests
  • Develop and maintain a roster of third-party production talent


  • Bachelor’s degree in audio/video production or equivalent program
  • 3+ years’ experience as a digital video or audio producer working on high-traffic properties
  • 3+ years audio editing experience, both in studio and on location
  • 1-2 years’ experience with audio hosting and publishing platforms (i.e. Soundcloud, iTunes, Spotify, Stitcher, etc.)
  • Solid knowledge and understanding of all aspects of audio production, including hardware and software, sound requirements, audio recording, workflow, and platforms
  • Skill to edit creative or meaningful sequences from available sound (trimming clips, timing to audio cues and storyboarding)
  • Solid understanding of audio and podcast formats and tools such as Adobe Audition, Premiere, Final Cut, Audacity
  • Exceptional storytelling capabilities, particularly as they translate to audio
  • Conversant in digital publishing technologies to effectively communicate with journalists
  • Excellent organizational, communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple projects proactively
  • A knowledge of video editing not required but preferred
  • Ability to work outside normal work hours as needed
  • Interest in contributing to an organization that strives to make a real difference in the community
