Reporting to the Director, External Relations & Communications, the Communications & Media Relations Specialist (CMRS) is responsible for advancing the Osgoode Hall Law School brand by developing and editing communications, and providing advice to the School's senior management and faculty. The CMRS is a highly motivated, creative, and solution-oriented writer and multi-channel communicator, who also provides media relations support to enhance the profile and reputation of Osgoode Hall Law School. The incumbent serves as the Editor of the Law School's alumni print publications, responsible for the on-going story identification and development, research, writing, editing of content, executing, and guiding the work of a range of internal and external collaborators. CMRS will develop print publications, such as the Annual Report and the Juris Doctor (JD) Brochure and produce content for electronic marketing materials such as the Osgoode Brief e-newsletter. In addition, CMRS will support the creation of other communication channels such as podcasts and videos.

This role is responsible for providing advice and making recommendations to the Director on matters related to communications and media relations and will write frequent news and feature stories and media releases. The incumbent will work across the Law School to provide resources, expertise, and stories for media, organizes media training through media relations, provides guidance and support to Osgoode faculty, pitching angles and stories to media and fielding media requests, building and developing relationships with reporters and researchers, and work with the Director to implement successful communications programs to support the School's objectives. This role works collaboratively with the External Relations & Communications team, with a thorough understanding of, and be able to both apply and monitor, the overall Osgoode Hall Law School and York University brands and messaging.

Qualifications

  • A university degree in journalism, communications, public relations along with a minimum five years of relevant communications and media relations experience in a university, teaching hospital or comparable environment. 
  • Experience creating high-quality editorial publications and multi-media projects (e.g., magazine and video) from conception to story development, writing/editing to distribution and optimizing content for digital and social channels. 
  • Experience advising senior leaders, including developing issues, briefs and developing op-ed (opinion editorial) content. 
  • Experience building and maintaining strong relationships with media. 
  • Experience with key journalists in the law sector is preferred. 
  • Demonstrated experience identifying, evaluating, writing, and pitching complex research stories. 
  • Experience conducting interviews with faculty researchers about complex legal material or similar, experience working with graphic designers, digital producers, and writers to deliver inventive editorial products.
