rabble is in search of individuals who believe that quality, independent journalism is vital for a healthy democracy and society, who want to join our board and help ensure that the stories we tell here at rabble continue to be told.

For 23 years, rabble.ca has been driven by the needs of its readers and of particular moments in time. For this time, it has been a beacon of independent and progressive opinion and journalism against the ocean of corporate media.

rabble.ca is an Ontario incorporated nonprofit and a qualified Canadian journalism organization.

In the spirit of promoting the most access possible to independent news and views rabble.ca continues to provide access to its content for free.

In order to achieve this mission and these goals, we rely on the leadership, insight, and support of our Board of Directors, a visionary group of activated leaders. 

rabble.ca seeks board members with experience in independent media, NGO management, financial oversight and board governance as well as a commitment to progressive values and independent media in Canada. Rabble seeks to ensure a board that reflects diverse perspectives and encourages applications from equity seeking groups.

The board of rabble.ca is a wholly volunteer board.  Members are not paid and dedicate their time and expertise to support rabble.ca and its mission. Please note that the board has no oversight over the editorial decisions of rabble.  
 
Responsibilities:
  • Attending at least one board meeting every 4-6 weeks.
  • Oversight of finances and organizational governance.
  • Being an ambassador for rabble within progressive movements and at public events.
  • Assisting with and supporting fundraising efforts and outreach. 
  • Serving as a part of hiring committees for new staff.
  • Recruiting of other board members and on-boarding. 
  • Membership or chairing at least one board sub-committee 
  • Human Resources
  • Finance
  • Fundraising
  • Governance
  • Building relationships with rabble stakeholders.
  • Actively promoting rabble and supporting its staff. 

Qualifications

  • Passionate about supporting independent journalism in Canada and progressive movements.
  • Connections to either journalism or progressive movements or politics.
  • Demonstrated support for diversity, equity and inclusion using an intersectional feminist lens.
  • Board experience and financial governance. 
  • Experience within the labour movement or not for profit sector is desirable but not required. 
  • Knowledge of small not-for-profit management. 
  • Lived-experience within Black, Indigenous, 2SLGBTQIA+, racialized or disability  communities are considered an asset.
