Description

Great West Media is seeking an experienced editor to lead two award-winning community newsrooms in the Edmonton region.

The St. Albert Gazette has served its community since 1961 and is one of Canada’s most celebrated community newspapers, publishing weekly in print and online 24/7 at stalbertgazette.com. Town and Country This Week and its companion site townandcountrytoday.com serve the communities of Athabasca, Barrhead, and Westlock, supported by dedicated reporters in each area.

As editor, you bring experience in print or online journalism as both a reporter and an editor, with a clear vision for what makes compelling community news. You are professional, organized, and innovative. You value coaching and collaborative leadership. You have excellent attention to detail and the ability to elevate others' writing. You are an engaged member of your community, with strong editorial judgement and an understanding of the role local media plays as both a community institution and a viable business.

What You’ll Do
  • Lead coverage across two publications, setting priorities that reflect community needs and audience interests.
  • Assign, edit, and approve stories for digital and print publication.
  • Mentor and coach reporters in interviewing, sourcing, writing, and multimedia.
  • Collaborate with production, sales, and digital teams daily to deliver strong print and digital products.
  • Build and manage editorial calendars, long-term coverage plans, and special series.
  • Uphold legal and ethical reporting standards, Canadian Press style, inclusive sourcing, and public-interest journalism principles.
  • Represent the publications in the community through stakeholder relationships and public engagement.

Qualifications

  • At least three years of reporting experience, with demonstrated editing or newsroom leadership responsibilities.
  • Strong writing, editing, and coaching abilities, with an eye for accuracy, clarity, and story structure.
  • A high degree of organization, with the ability to manage long-term planning, multiple deadlines, and competing priorities.
  • A commitment to fairness, ethical journalism, and engaged community reporting.
  • Experience with digital storytelling, SEO, headlines, and analytics is an asset.
  • Comfort with public-facing roles, community relationships, and representing your newsroom.

Great West Media is a family-owned community news company, serving more than 20 communities across Alberta through eight news publications. The company also operates Canada’s most modern web printing facility in St. Albert, printing dozens of community, daily, and agricultural publications from across Western Canada.
