The Kamsack Times is hiring a Local Journalism Initiative (LJI) Reporter to strengthen civic journalism in a rural region in eastern Saskatchewan covering Kamsack, Cote First Nation, Keeseekoose First Nation, The Key First Nation and four other smaller communities.

This position is supported through the Local Journalism Initiative, a national program that funds original, civic-focused journalism in underserved communities.

We'd like to place a particular focus on improving our coverage for Indigenous issues. In our coverage area, there are three First Nations communities: Cote First Nation, Keeseekoose First Nation and The Key First Nation. As well, 37 per cent of the population in our coverage area has Indigenous ancestry.

What You’ll Cover

This role is focused on original civic journalism, including:

  • First Nations issues and governance
  • Municipal councils and local governance
  • School boards and education issues
  • Rural healthcare access and regional services
  • Courts and public safety (as assigned)
  • Agriculture and rural economic issues
  • Community organizations, events, and local initiatives
  • Human-interest features that reflect the people and priorities of the region

What You’ll Produce

You’ll contribute consistent, professional local journalism with expectations of approximately:

  • 8–10 stories per week for our newspapers depending on the news cycle.
  • At least one story per weekday published online.
  • At least one large feature per month.

Location

You’ll be located in Kamsack, where you’ll find small town charm with big community spirit. Kamsack is beside the Duck Mountain Provincial Park, has access to some of the best fishing and hunting in the province, and has a golf course, ice arena and a curling rink.

Our office is located in Canora, a half-hour to the west.

Key Responsibilities

  • Report, write, and file original local stories each week
  • Attend meetings and events (some evening coverage required)
  • Conduct interviews, research, and fact-checking
  • Work collaboratively with the publisher/editor for planning and edits
  • Maintain strong journalistic standards (accuracy, fairness, verification)
  • Build trust and sources across multiple rural and Indigenous communities

Qualifications

  • A journalism degree, diploma or equivalent experience is preferred 
  • Excellent writing and interviewing skills. 
  • Knowledge of Canadian Press style 
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating with a team 
  • A driver’s license and reliable transportation are required 
  • Willing to work evenings and weekends when needed 
  • An understanding of Anishinabe (Saulteaux) culture is an asset
