The Highlander
Location: Haliburton, Ontario

Deadline: February 16, 2026
Salary: From $41,000
Description
Join one of Canada’s leading community newspapers as we change the local newspaper landscape in 2026
Are you ready to lead one of the most exciting initiatives in Canadian rural media? The Highlander Newspaper is looking for the right candidate to lead its Local Journalism Initiative (LJI) project.
The job has three components.
Our LJI Journalist will manage The Highlander’s news feed – a new app under development that will provide anyone, anywhere with instant access to Haliburton County news from multiple sources. You’ll be on the forefront of an effort to provide our community with trustworthy and timely news with no algorithmic manipulation.
Once a week, you’ll also co-host What the Highlander, a new podcast about important issues in Haliburton County. You’ll find the right guests, research the topics, and help provide lively and interesting conversation for our listeners.
And as a journalist, you’ll be part of our editorial team, covering local stories and issues for The Highlander and contributing to its print products.
This is a unique role for someone passionate about Haliburton County, rural Ontario and journalism. We’re aiming to displace the sewer of social media with trustworthy information. And with the podcast, we’re expanding our mission to bring ideas and information to our community so people can make the best decisions for our future.
The Local Journalism Initiative is a one-year grant supported by the Government of Canada. If the placement is successful, we will make every effort to offer permanent employment after the first year.
Qualifications
Ideally you will be a qualified journalist. We’re looking for someone tenacious who understands the danger of fake news and wants to fix it. The right candidate will be relentlessly curious and consistently determined. You’ll be joining a newspaper that has defied the odds and isn’t intimidated by the stakes.
To apply, you must either live in Haliburton County or be willing and able to relocate here immediately. Compensation includes salary, health benefits and vacation pay on a four or five-day work week. Weekend work will likely be required at least once per month.
Interested candidates should send resume, cover letter (stating you found this job on Jeff Gaulin's Journalism Job Board), and samples/clippings by 5 p.m. on Feb. 16 to:
